Nick likes boys. Nice try.
Actually Nick *doesn't* like boys even though he attended NYU as a
drama major and has been appearing in The Fantastiks for the last two
years on Broadway (New York). During their interview on the Regis and
Kelly show, Kelly asked where they had been living since the
conclusion of the race. It has been established earlier that Starr
(their last name is Spangler, thus she is Starr Spangler) was a former
Dallas (football team) Cheerleader (they showed video of her cheering
at a game, she is very hot). Nick said Starr had been staying with
him and his girlfriend at their apartment and that the siblings had to
lie to his girlfriend about them winning. Nick said every time she
asked they would say they came "this" close (thumb/forefinger almost
together). He then said on the morning of the CBS Morning Show
announcement he told her and she got angry, slapped him on the arm and
said "All this time you have been lying to me!"
I too believed Nick was gay. In the beginning of the TAR show it ran
an excerpt from their audition tape depicting Starr and Nick
performing a cheer. We had little to no background on Nick or Starr
at that point and I thought it very gay that a straight guy would be
doing a cheer with his sister. It didn't make sense unless he was gay
or was a cheerleader himself. Throughout the race I just assumed Nick
was gay. But now that we know Starr was a professional cheerleader it
falls into place. And we know that it was Starr who insisted her
brother audition with her for the Race so it isn't so silly to see him
performing a cheer. OTOH, others swore the Frat Brothers were gay. I
never thought that. My gaydar said no, that they were just two
typical Jewish boys. From their conversation on The CBS Morning Show
they are obviously straight.
Now Nick may be fooling himself or hiding in the closet publicly -
after all, he is a drama major and has been appearing on Broadway for
two years with a troop of other male/female actors, the majority of
those male actors are gay, but there is always that one guy we suspect
as gay who turns out to be straight. Hugh Jackman, during his early
rise to stardom, was thought to be gay but there has never been a hint
of a gay scandal or relationship. He is married with three little
girls (I think it is three). Now Hugh can sing, dance and act as good
as any gay man - and Nick can too, quite well.
So for the public record, Nick is straight. Altho' I would not be
surprised to hear, down the road, that he has been fooling himself
(and us). I still find it hard to believe that a straight man and his
straight sister could get along so well and win that race. Now a gay
man and his sister could win it very well. And Nick is so bright and
so level-headed but he is the older of the siblings (23, she is 22).
During the R&K interview Nick did say that he and Starr fought like
cats and dogs as kids but once they each reached adulthood and went
off to college separately (she Texas, he NY) they became very good
friends. It was Starr who showed up at his NY home with video camera
in hand to announce they were going to try out for TAR.
Starr did say that she and Dallas (Team Dallas and Toni, ie., son and
mother) were dating and had been for three months since the end of the
race. Toni and Dallas were there, standing in the wings, and R&K
panned to them during the conversation, they waved, Dallas looked
really good and Toni has lost about ten to fifteen pounds, she looked
very good too). It would be to Dallas' advantage to keep that
relationship going - after all - she is a half a millionaire!
I really enjoyed this TAR. The last few TARs I haven't enjoyed the
winners and it wasn't fun for me since Rob and Amber were on the
show. I thought Rob was amazing and the first participant to
literally grab a local citizen as a personal guide. I thought that
was extremely bright and clever, especially during on of the races and
they hauled some Chinese woman with them to the mat. Very funny.
Nick was much more classy and sophisticated about it but he didn't
feel one bit of guilt (and said so) when he stole another team's
taxi. Right on Nick! :-)
A great show and I was thrilled by their win - jumping up and down
with them when they got to the finish line! WaaaHOO!
