The shows begins with all teams on the plane from Sao Paulo, Brazil to
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Upon arriving they make their way to a newspaper stand for their next
clue which tells them to take the ferry to Zanzibar. Once again everyone
is bunched up.

Up ahead though is a double blind u-turn. Will our villains (Matt and
Redmond) from not only the last episode but by cutting in line for ferry
tickets this one as well have karma bite them?

It does and also bit is Seth and Olive, so called Team America.

Detour - Build it or Weave It. Team put together a school desk and seat
Ikea style or weave a couple of eco-friendly baskets out of leaves.

Team America does what they need to do and finish first at the
carpentry. Now it's basket weaving time.

Liz & Michael(the big bearded guy) are close behind. They take their
finished product to the school as well, learn some quick phrases and
they are on their way to Darajani Market back in town leading the pack.

With most teams eventually on their way to the market its here that Matt
& Redmond pull out one of the great comebacks and not only do the
weaving but finish the carpentry before some of the other teams.

Road Block - What's For Dinner? At a food market teams must fill out a
shopping list of farm fresh goods.

Michael excels through his shopping list and he and Liz are off to the
pit stop at a roof top cafe in Zanzibar Town.

Team America's finishes off their weaving and make their way to the
market where some teams are struggling to find enough money to pay off
their bill.

Matt & Redmond do incredibly well at the market task and are closing in
on 2nd place right behind Vanck and Ashton.

Not too much surprise as Liz/Michael come in 1st. Tara/Joey are second
and Vanck/Ashton are third with their arch-nemesis Matt/Redmond right
behind them.

So who comes last? Well that depends on whether Floyd from the Fun Meter
team can find his passport. His cabbie returns it just in time and they
fall down the finish line from 5th to 8th.

Our last place team is good at bombing foreign nations but not so hot at
weaving baskets. Team America is out and the double blind u-turn takes
out one of the stronger teams at least in the minds of some.

Next week in a 2hr episode Vanck's had enough running and Brooke reaches
her breaking point with her partner.

Thanks for the recap, Frosty. So Michael is the bearded butcher? Do some
other teams call him "Redbeard," or did I misunderstand?

Anyway, I find it difficult to learn the team names. I think that is because of the
random pairing. For some reason, I didn't have the same problems when the
teams were marrieds, siblings, best friends, etc. I daresay I will probably
get them sorted out in a week or so. I should go online where I can see the
pairs and their names and photos.

Thanks, Frosty...but I found a site showing how they are paired up...that's what I needed.
I think I must have heard "Redmond,," not "Redbeard."

Dunno if other teams called him that, but I'm happy to use that nickname in
discussions here. (grin)

Or just re-watch the beginning of episode one. (May be available "on demand"
if you have cable.) See also:

I don't watch TAR that intently, and the first two or three shows are usually
something of a blur for me with regard to recognizing all of the teams. After
some eliminations it's easier. Oddly, I'm finding this season's pairings more
distinctive, although the biggest stand-out, the Mutt and Jeff women, are gone
already. (Now there's a dated reference.) And if you showed me these episodes
with any reference to their ad-hoc matchups removed, I could easily believe the
racers were already friends/couples/relatives. Except for Jenn and Kevin --
they truly are this season's odd couple.

I note there is only one racer over forty, and just seven are in their thirties.
Fully two-thirds of the contestants are only in their twenties. Perhaps this
age skew has been common on TAR, but it seems particularly pronounced to me this
season.

I laughed when I read "Mutt and Jeff," because that is how I thought of them, too.
I didn't refer to them as that because I thought most readers wouldn't know what
I was talking about. Yes, I am older than dirt. LOL.

We had the comic strip in the local paper, I'm not sure when it
disappeared, but it was there about fifty years ago. I guess that can add
up if you weren't around ten like me back then.

Matt and Redmond may be brusque in their way, but I don't quite understand
the grief over the helicopter signup. Why should they wait if they got there
first? An agreement with another team to flip for first only makes sense if
they arrive at the same time.

I missed it; I assume Seth and Olive were targeted at the U-turn because they
were perceived as a strong team?

Sara made a comment about working on a second desk, but the rest of the segment
made it appear as if they needed to build and deliver only one.

An American butcher knows about Zanzibar produce?

Haggling and getting a good exchange rate played a part in this task.

Well they could have waited for the 2nd team to show up and if it was
not their agreement partners then they should have signed but still they
should have waited.

Did not catch that even on 2nd viewing.

Looking at the shopping list about 3/4 would be known to him.

Eggs, banana tea, vanilla pods/stick, snapper fish, nutmeg, live
chicken, coconot, matches, cinnamon sticks are the easy ones.
