Not surprising as the ratings, while not especially good, were decent enough. Plus, given how cheap the show is to produce compared to a standard one-hour drama, it plays to TAR's benefit.

It is a single-season renewal and not a full year which indicates to me that TAR may be stuck in "mid-season replacement" mode. So, it could be almost a full year before we see the 30th season.

At this point, TAR seems secure at CBS until Phil 'n crew decide to quit, there is a big change over at the top of CBS, or if the ratings for the next season are terrible.

Yea, I think it's new role at CBS is as a "utility infielder", going wherever there's a hole in the schedule.

I'd love the alternate schedule on Wednesdays with Survivor, with TAR running winter/summer. But a winter season of TAR in between Survivors would run too long, and push the end of the spring Survivor into the early summer. They could do it by running double episodes in January (whatever the 9PM EST show is would probably be in reruns, anyway.)

That's a pretty good idea. I get the feeling that CBS might be content with just ordering a single season and then starting it in April if it doesn't replace a cancelled, one-hour show.

Because they have the NFL on Thursdays, that provides some cushion for the line-up, so I don't see TAR in the fall unless something disastrous occurs.

They only get 5 TNF games this year, Sept 28 to Oct 26.

That's still a cushion. Perhaps not much of one, but it does take up the entire three hours of the night.

TAR is not on the CBS fall schedule, so it's become that utility player. There's a couple of other announced renewals, including Elementary, that were also not included.
