Episode 8 begins with the teams going to Plaza Krakow, a barge with a
pool in Krakow, Poland but first they get to use a smartphone and use
the Travelocity app to book their flight. Justin/Diana are the only team
on the first flight arriving at 11:20a. They may not only be good but
lucky. With everyone else on the other flight which arrives at 12:40p
that gives them a good 1h20m lead.

Some funny comments by Tanner & Josh about the all-knowing Justin.

The clue at the beach barge leads to a Detour - Mine or Music. While
Mine involves hard labour at an underground salt mine, Music requires
that a team member learn some piano tunes while his/her teammate begs
for money. Oh, the Music detour also requires teams to take a piano
along with them to the begging location.

Justin/Diana go to the mine and figure out a good routine to transfer
the salt into the carts. They finish relatively quickly and are on their
way to their next stop, the Oskar Schindler factory/museum. After an
emotional visit they are sent to their Road Block located in the Jewish
quarter.

When the other teams reach Plaza Krakow they evenly split detours to do
but getting a taxi after arriving at the barge is overly complicated.
Did no one tell their cabbie to wait?

Teams do make it to their Detour locations but while they work at them,
Justin's Road Block has him identifying several Jewish plates of food to
take to a party at a nearby restaurant. Justin recognizes 2 off the bat
and guesses the rest.

As with most begging challenges its tough to watch teams beg for money.
Even though Tiffany & Krista are wearing tight and short clothing it's
not helping nor does crying.

Justin looks to hit the food challenge on his first try and he and Diana
come in first and win a trip to China.

Who comes in last? Well it comes down to the wire between Tiffany &
Krista and Tanner & Josh who got lost on the way to the mine. In a near
virtual tie for last, T&K show up on the mat just before the boys who
get to stay around one more day as it is an non-elimination leg.

Famous last place words from Tanner & Josh - "The only way we can go is
up."

Next week we go to every ones favorite TAR country...India! And you
thought the begging in this episode was bad.

Thanks for the recap, I went to a used book sale Friday night and didn't
get back in time for the show.

It would be fun if people in India came up to the contestants begging for
money.

And they reply "Where's your piano?"

Episode 8 begins with the teams going to Plaza Krakow, a barge with a
pool in Krakow
On of the unfortunate things about TAR... we are often shown something
interesting -- a barge with a pool built into it?? -- but we never learn
anything more about it, as in this case it only serves as means to get
the racers to dive into the pool with their clothes on. Many other buildings
and monuments simply serve as a backdrops for getting the next
route info envelope. There could be an entire parallel travelogue program
with three or four minute segments covering each leg's destinations in more
depth.

For myself, I'd be hesitant to pick the latter task -- it seems to me that
having to rely on the kindness of strangers introduces a big random element.
But if you don't have the brawn, or you think your salesmanship is stronger
than your back, then I guess busking is the way to go. I was a little surprised
that the cheerleaders were depicted as having trouble getting money.

I've often wondered how the racers know whether to keep their cab or
let it go when they get to each waypoint. We've seen some confusion
on the part of racers over this, and occassionally also over whether they
should take their bags or leave them behind.

I thought when Justin realized he didn't know most of the dishes, he went
into the street and found someone to tell him what they were. Eventually all
the teams did this, but some tried to guess first. Even if you could identify a
couple of items, there were still too many possibilities to attempt a guesswork
strategy in this task.

They forgot there's another direction -- out.

Agreed. So many times I want to know more about where they are but the
show doesn't allow for much time to be spent on every place they
visit.

I think the problem the cheerleaders had was attitude. So much of what
we saw was the one girl complaining and whining at people to try and
get money. That was turning people off. When her attitude changed the
money started to flow.

Occasionally they must be getting instructions to leave their bags,
especially when they all are apparently leaving their bags at the same
location.

Well whatshisname used to post about travel here using the show as a hook.
Though mostly it was about travelling tips rather than details about
location. He still does it, on his webpage, I don't have the URL handy.

Maybe they ought to put on the screen some name for the locations,
something that will find it easily with a websearch. URLs are hard, they
may disappear before we can take them in.

Or if they put such details on the webpage, a sidebar to each episode,
adding some details about where they were.
