Once more I am dumbstruck by the ignorance of nearly every team, re
the French Revolution.

We studied it in high school. Where were these guys?

The easiest thing in the world was the "slogan" of liberte, egalite,
fraternite. Evidenced by their horrid, horrid mispronunciations of those
three words, they had never heard them before. And the one team I heard
getting the pronunciation right..the papperazzi..the girl knew the first two, and not the third. How is that possible? I am really disappointed in the education of these teams.

I wasn't paying much attention, but when I realized what was going on, I
only needed one to know the other two. And I only needed one since I
missed whatever the clue said. The show even had a greeter dressed like
someone out of the French Revolution.

I also thought the guy they had to find to get the clue before the
rapping, he sort of looked like Johnny Depp. I'm not sure whether it was
deliberate emulation, or Johnny Depp is trying to look like this guy.

This week I actually noticed the mother and son, they really haven't had
much presence that I noticed up till now. I must have seen them, but not
realized it was the team with mother and son.

That guy reminded me of Russell Brand.

I'm not sure I would do too much better with the pronounciation, but yes, given
the intertwined history of the U.S. and France, particularly vis-a-vis their
respective revolutions, every school child should know this.

Much more difficult was the rap challange if, like me, the teams had never
studied french. I couldn't connect the words they were rapping with the
lyrics shown on the screen. Does anybody here know enough French to
provide a translation?

The White Phantom? Is he supposed to be a character from somewhere?
I am unfamiliar with him, or any connection with France, Paris, or why the
racers should recognize him.

BTW, no comments at all on the previous week's episode, where the racers
made just about every mistake possible except hiring a taxi with a driver who
is taking gulps from a bottle of booze?

I wanted to comment on the previous week's episode but other things kept
coming up. I devote most of free/screwing around time to BB. Anyway, the
paparazzi team drove me crazy. More so than Denise. I was hoping the
crocodiles would eat them but no such luck. Now it looks like they could
survive the next leg unless God magically injects Denise with the ability to
rap in French. Or they wise up and switch tasks.

I thought all of the tasks in Africa were great. Some of the best they've
done. Usually tasks like that are saved for the end of the race.

Yes great eps in Africa. Possible Emmy candidates.

With the gorge zipline(which I remembered more so as a zipline rather
then a fall from season 1) and the Arch pitstop, that's 2 remembrances
in a row from the first season.

My French is really rusty and I wasn't paying that much attention. The one word that kept tripping her up was "moins"--it means 'less' or 'without' and you don't pronounce the 'n' or 's'. "Meins" (mine) was in there too; again, no 'n' or 's'.

Apparently there's an old French novel called "Le Fantom Blanc, ou Protecteur Mysterieux" (The White Ghost, or Mysterious Protector). Never heard of it, and the Amazon listing isn't much help.

Yes, from context of the show he seemed to be famous there, but I've sure
never heard of him. I step down from the TinTin tie in a few years back in
Belgium.

If this is the first time you've been disappointed in teams' education, or lack thereof, you've had a pretty good run.

No, Karen, I have been disappointed before....can't recall what the last instance was,
but it was even more egregious (for me).

We see that lack demonstrated every season as teams mangle the
pronounciation of place names, incorrectly locate cities, mistake cities
for countries, etc. Also occasionally at challanges (how many notes are
in an octave?)

Racers not reading the clues or not reading them carefully is way worse than
mispronouncing a place name as far as I'm concerned. I can't recall any team
winning the race by half-ass reading the clues but I can recall a lot of
them getting eliminated doing that. You'd think that after 26 seasons teams
would clue into that fact but they never seem to do.

Yeah. Rule #1 of the race is read the clue carefully.

Oh, it's even more basic than that. "Me and her went...", "you guys-es <whatever>" (your, the word is YOUR, as 'in belonging to you'; if you ever hear a news story that someone in southern California went on a violent rampage over "you guys-es", yes, that's right, it's me)...all some of them have to do is open their mouths.

One great thing about the last few episodes and it looks like it will
continue is Diana sticking up to Justin. That guy is such a frickin' jerk.
She's one of my favorites on this race so it sucks I can't really cheer for
her without cheering for him. I find he's very disrespectful toward her.

You're surprised people didn't remember minor trivia a decade after
leaving school? I took AP History, and don't recall any class dealing
with the French Revolution in that much detail. At best a teacher may
have mentioned the phrase in passing, and as I didn't take French it
just flew right by me.

I didn't read it, but I just saw some piece titled "Why Lafayette is still
America's Best Friend" or something like that".

The thing about memory is you forget if you don't use it. But often it
will suddenly bubble up when something triggers it. I would think this is
one of them.

History in elementary and high school is broad, to give a basis for any
later study, and something like those three words is far more likely to
taught than some deeper bit of history.

Here's my transcription of the French rap lyrics:

Moins dans le quartier,
poussé à aller taper,
J'engrenais les miens
à bouger et serrer,
Quatre-vingt-onze premier disque
premiére part dàns les bacs
quatre-vingt-douze / quatre-vingt-quatorze,
nos tactiques tougours l'attaque.
C'est Passi en solo
pour un nouvel album,
Pour toutes les métropoles
mais aussi-pour les
DOM-TOM

I ran this through a couple of online translators, but the resulting
English text made little sense.

Heh. The English translation I got made about as much sense as, well, rap in English. Of course, with the translator popping out "four-twenty-eleven" instead of "ninety-one" but two lines later getting "ninety-two" and "ninety-four" right doesn't give me much confidence in the translation.
Total gibberish, but most rap is.
